Regional ‘Human Rights’ Moot Court Competition kicks off at UJ

Body

Law students from Arab universities on Tuesday participated in the activities of the regional "Human Rights" moot court competition, which took place at UJ’s Faculty of Law. The competition kicked off in the presence of UJ president Prof. Ekhleif Tarawneh, Vice-president Prof. Musa Al Luzi and a number of senior judges in the Jordanian courts. Attended by students from Lebanese, Tunisian, Algerian, Moroccan, and Palestinian universities, the competition constitutes an important opportunity to promote the student's real-world lawyering skills. The competition is organized in cooperation with Raoul Wallenberg Institute for Human Rights and the Arab Academic Network for Human Rights. “The competition aims at building knowledge and exchange legal expertise and enable law students to exercise their lawyering skills,” said Prof. Ibrahim Al Jazi, Dean of the Faculty of Law. The two-day competition includes five sessions of oral arguments in front of a group of experienced judges from Arab states. Dr. Mahasen Al –Jagoub, Coordinator for the Arab Academic Network for Human Rights, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Law, stated that the competition entails simulation of real-life court proceedings. “Students are playing the roles of lawyers, prosecutors, witnesses, accused, and judges” she added. The arguments focused on a hypothetical case based on the International Human Rights Law.
